The website for the 6th Annual Second Life Community Convention is now live! The convention will take place at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers on August 13-15, 2010. 50 Early Bird discount tickets have been set aside for those who register early. SL residents are encouraged to submit a proposal or volunteer.

Earlier this week, the Chilbo Community was profiled by reporter Bixyl Shuftan in the SL Newspaper, and the story is an interesting overview of our community from another perspective.  Bixyl interviewed Chilbo resident Alleara Snoodle and also joined us for a rousing blues set with Von Johin at MS Hawker’s Germelhausen Coffeehouse.

The Renaissance Gallery was recently featured in the Second Life Destination Guide as a “must-see” for art lovers. Curated by Chilbo resident, Rachel Corleone, the gallery is home to a small collection of  paintings from the late middle ages. The gallery also has coffee shop and an olive grove.

Rachel commented that the art from this period often “presented of both Christian and pagan scenes,” as well as “the enhanced perspective that started to be used during this period.” When asked about her favorite piece, she picks Sandro Botticelli’s Venus and Mars, a painting dating back to 1483 for its apparent humor and composition.

Chilbo resident Tara Yeats was one of 50 machinima artists taking part in the mixed reality event MMIF 2010. Her entry Torn Fields-war poets 1914-1918  Torn Fields on You Tube documents the very moving Frideswide sim in Second Life, an immersive exhibit by the First World War Poetry Virtual Archive, University of Oxford. This sim offers an amazing virtual experience of the Western Front trenches and British encampments of the Great War, and poetry inspired by the war. The machinima and the sim incorporate materials from The First World War Poetry Virtual Archive, University of Oxford, under the JISC Model Licence for educational use.

The MMIF 2010 MaMachinima International Festival took place on Feb. 20th , 2010 at the MMIF sims in Second Life and Planetart in Amsterdam. MMIF 2010 was the second edition of an annual film festival in 3D cyberspace with a screening in physical space. MMIF is a celebration of machinima, a new cinematic art form, created with virtual worlds and video games. On 3D Internet platforms like Second Life, any kind of movie set can be build for very low cost. The MMIF aims to bring machinima to a wider audience, online – and offline. Machinima artists from all over the world were present in real time at the virtual MMIF Theatre. The audience in Amsterdam followed the MMIF event projected live on a big screen at the Planetart Medialab Artspace. MMIF is a volunteer-run non-profit collaboration of MaMachinima with Planetart, UrbanResort, Meta.Live.Nu, Pop Art Lab, VMax, Ystreams.TV, Metaworld Broadcasting, MetaMeets, Gallery Fermate, and many volunteers. MMIF 2010 is financed by donations and gifts. Virtual land sponsored by Linden Lab. The MMIF was initiated by the Dutch Film maker Chantal Harvey.

Chilbo community rejoice!

Hi all!  Just wanted to let you know the good news, Route 9 has been paved!  The paving runs through all Greater Chilbo sims, starting at in Ungyo sim to the west, and ending at Jsindo sim to the east. Congrats to all who have land around the road and many thanks to everyone who voted for the proposal – a great example of what we can do as a community!

Until recently, Kuwol’s Northeast quadrant laid bare. Separated by Kuwol Commons to the West, the area flanked by a tri-level clothing store owned by member Lace Hansome, and a massive stone and metal arch structure, remained unused.

That all changed last month, when Chilbo community leader, Fleep Tuque, picked up several large parcels in the area that went on sale. She set about creating a new residential location to accommodate the rapid growth of the community, which, as she put it, “is bursting at the seams.” Nicknamed, Kuwol Place, half a dozen residential lofts were added into the mix, with one unit already rented out.

The success of this newly created residential area helped further the physical boundaries of the community, so much so that nearby Hudson Park owners used the same sidewalk textures when they redid their landscaping for the Spring. Kuwol land owner Riall Caproni, also agreed to place sidewalks on her property to help maintain the connection. Her agreement to add in sidewalks is a key element in the expansion, and made it possible to introduce direct pedestrian paths from Kuwol into Route 10 and Chilbo.

New Chilbo member Maddog Easterling, who moved into the area not long ago says, “This area is so nice at night.” Easterling who owns a parcel, nestled between the new rental units and the park, said of his garden view, “…it’s like I have extra landscape prims.”

Chilbo Community Annual Resident Census 2010

Fleep Tuque completes the Chilbo Annual Resident Census for 2010

It’s that time of year again! The annual census is when we do an official headcount of our active members and get feedback about community services and facilities.

All members of the Chilbo Community must complete the census to remain in good standing in the group. Those who do not complete the census will be placed on inactive status, and eventually removed from the group altogether!

The survey only takes about 5 minutes to complete, and we use the information gathered to ensure that Chilbo is meeting the needs of our members.

We hope to have the numbers crunched and data analyzed in time for the annual State of the Community address at the February Town Hall meeting.

Yesterday, the Chilbo community played host to a benefit concert and block party in an effort to raise funds for the victims of the January 13 earthquake in Haiti. The benefit raised over L$130,000 in funds with some 500 individual contributions made to the cause.

The four-hour event was held at the Madhupak sandbox next to the Chilbo Museum, and was organized by MS Hawker, Chilbo Events Co-chair and Germelshausen Coffeehouse owner, with logistics by Chilbo Residential & Commercial Chair, Kristine Kristan. Kristine also owns Mad Wax Records and K2 Gallery in Madhupak. The Chilbo Road Press provided signage, and will oversee the transferring of funds to the organizations.

The first half featured music acts Kellee Blaylock, Ictus Belford, Avatar Quinzet, Untolerable “Bo” Bohemian and Johnny99 Gumshoe who performed 30 minute sets. DJ Chingy Chun of the Blackhearts Cafe played popular 80’s rock tunes for the second half. In addition to donating their time, all of the performers added their own contributions to the fund. Artist Tegan Jenvieve created a one-of-a-kind auction art piece that garnered additional money.

Several extremely generous contributions were made that ranged up to L$6,000, with event-goers continuously donating throughout the event. The set goal of L$100,000 was reached during the DJed portion of the event, and with 30 minutes left,  supporters dug deep and came through with an additional L$29K, easily surpassing the $L100,000 mark. Additional amounts were also donated after the event.

The L$100,000 goal was surpassed by the end of the show.

The donation heart will be left at the sandbox for the remainder of the long weekend and will be available for donations until Tuesday, January 19, when it will be moved to the Chilbo Road Press office for ongoing contributions. Those who would like to make donations can contact the organizations directly, or visit one of the many benefits that are being held this and next weekend around the grid.

All proceeds collected for the benefit will be split between the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders organizations. For the sake of transparency, documentation of fund transfers will be made available at the Chilbo Road Press office.
